Farmers in Kitui County are set to benefit from improved financial services and enhanced SACCO management following the distribution of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) equipment to 20 organized ward-based farmers’ Savings and Credit Cooperative Organizations (SACCOs).

The initiative, led by Kitui County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture and Livestock Development, Dr. Stephen Mbaya Kimwele, saw the distribution of computers, printers, and Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) units to farmer SACCOs during events held in Mutomo, Kitui South, and Ithumbi in Mwingi Central.

Speaking during the exercise, Dr. Kimwele emphasized that digital transformation is critical in modernizing SACCO operations and improving service delivery to members. He noted that automation helps reduce paperwork, minimizes errors, and enables efficient management of financial records and transactions.
According to Dr. Kimwele, the adoption of digital systems will empower SACCO bookkeepers to streamline workflows, improve accounting processes, and enhance compliance with financial regulations. The new technology is also expected to strengthen governance and transparency within the farmer organizations.

The digital platforms will allow members to make savings and share contributions remotely through mobile money services such as M-Pesa. SACCO officials will then process statements and receipts electronically, making transactions faster, more secure, and more convenient for members.
The move aligns with Governor Dr. Julius Malombe’s commitment to supporting farmer organizations as key drivers of agricultural development and rural economic growth. By enhancing access to digital financial services, the county aims to promote financial inclusion,

improve access to credit, and empower farmers to invest more effectively in agricultural production. The initiative marks a significant step toward building resilient, technology-driven farmer institutions across Kitui County.
