The Makueni Agricultural Show 2026 showcased a wide variety of fruits suitable for Kenya's dry regions, including the unique Citron (Citrus medica). Recognized by its large size, rough thick rind, and elongated shape, citron attracted many visitors interested in learning about its medicinal, nutritional, and commercial importance. Although it resembles a lemon, citron is mainly valued for its thick aromatic peel rather than its juice.

Agricultural experts explained that citron grows well in warm climates with well-drained soils, making Makueni and other Lower Eastern counties suitable for its cultivation. The tree requires moderate watering during establishment and regular pruning to encourage healthy growth and fruit production. Once mature, it can produce fruits for many years, providing farmers with a reliable source of income.

Unlike ordinary lemons, citron contains very little pulp but has a thick peel rich in essential oils and antioxidants. The peel is widely used in making marmalade, candies, herbal teas, perfumes, and natural cosmetics. It is also used in traditional medicine to help relieve coughs, improve digestion, and boost the body's immune system due to its high Vitamin C content.

During the exhibition, farmers were encouraged to diversify into citron farming because of the increasing demand from food processors, herbal product manufacturers, and specialty fruit markets. The fruit's unique appearance and long shelf life also make it attractive for local and export markets.

Citron trees are relatively easy to manage when protected from common citrus pests and diseases through proper orchard management. Regular fertilization, irrigation during prolonged dry periods, and timely harvesting ensure high-quality fruits.

The display at the Makueni Agricultural Show demonstrated that citron is more than just an unusual citrus fruit—it is a valuable crop with enormous potential for value addition, nutrition, and agribusiness. As farmers continue embracing fruit diversification, citron offers another promising opportunity to improve household incomes while supplying consumers with healthy and versatile citrus products.
