One of the most exciting attractions at the Mkulima Digital tour during the Nakuru ASK Show 2026 was a dairy farmer's stand where visitors witnessed a remarkable achievement—a healthy cow that had successfully given birth to twin calves. The rare occurrence sparked curiosity among many farmers eager to understand how cows can produce twins.
Although most cows normally give birth to a single calf, twin births are possible. Experts estimate that twin pregnancies occur in only about 2–5 percent of cattle births. Twins develop when a cow releases two eggs during ovulation and both are fertilized. In rare cases, a single fertilized egg can also split into two embryos, producing identical twins.
The farmer explained that while genetics may influence the chances of twin births, proper management plays a significant role in ensuring both the mother and calves remain healthy. He emphasized that the cow must receive enough high-quality feed rich in energy, protein, vitamins, and minerals throughout pregnancy. Good nutrition supports the growth of the unborn calves and helps the cow maintain a healthy body condition.
The farmer also stressed the importance of providing clean, fresh water at all times. Water is essential for digestion, nutrient transport, milk production, and the overall health of the pregnant cow. Adequate water intake, together with balanced feeding and proper veterinary care, increases the chances of a successful pregnancy and safe delivery.
The display served as an important lesson that excellent livestock management, quality nutrition, and proper animal care are key ingredients for productive and profitable dairy farming.
