The Government has strengthened Kenya's dairy value chain after delivering another milk cooler to Ol-Kalau Dairy Cooperative during the Farmers’ Field Day held in Ol-Kalau, Nyandarua County. The latest installation brings the total number of government-supported milk coolers in Nyandarua County to 30, marking a significant investment in improving milk handling, quality, and market access for dairy farmers.
The initiative is expected to enhance milk aggregation, reduce post-harvest losses caused by spoilage, and enable farmers to earn better returns through improved milk quality and efficient storage. Milk coolers play a vital role in preserving fresh milk before it reaches processors, ensuring farmers can supply high-quality produce that meets industry standards.
During the event, several government agencies demonstrated their commitment to supporting livestock farmers through practical services and technical expertise. These included the Kenya Animal Genetic Resources Centre, Kenya Veterinary Board, Kenya Dairy Board, and Kenya Veterinary Vaccines Production Institute (KEVEVAPI). Farmers received training on modern dairy farming practices, animal health management, disease prevention, breeding technologies, and productivity improvement.
The government's continued investment in the dairy sector aligns with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which seeks to increase agricultural productivity, create jobs, strengthen value chains, and improve household incomes across the country. By investing in dairy infrastructure and extension services, the Government aims to empower farmers to produce more milk, access reliable markets, and contribute to Kenya's food security.
The Farmers’ Field Day also brought together senior national and county leaders, underscoring the importance of collaboration in transforming agriculture. Among those present were Presidential Senior Advisor Moses Kuria, Principal Secretary Patrick Kilemi, Nyandarua Governor Anne Waiguru, alongside other national and local leaders.
The event reaffirmed the Government's commitment to building a productive, competitive, and sustainable dairy industry that benefits farmers while driving economic growth in rural communities. With continued investments in infrastructure, technology, and farmer support, Nyandarua is positioning itself as one of Kenya's leading dairy-producing counties.
