Its A Breakthrough; Kenya-Tanzania Trade Pact Opens New Era for Cross-Border Agricultural Commerce(Details)

Kenya and Tanzania have renewed their commitment to strengthening regional trade and agricultural cooperation after signing eight bilateral agreements designed to improve commerce and ease the movement of goods across borders. The agreements, signed during high-level talks between William Ruto and Samia Suluhu Hassan, mark a major step toward improving economic ties between the two East African neighbours.

A key breakthrough in the new agreements is the mutual recognition of sanitary and phytosanitary certificates. This development is expected to greatly reduce delays that have affected the transportation of agricultural products such as milk, meat, fruits, and vegetables between the two countries. For years, traders and farmers have faced challenges at border points due to lengthy inspections, inconsistent standards, and administrative bottlenecks.

The new framework will allow goods certified in one country to be accepted more easily in the other, helping speed up customs clearance and lowering transportation costs. Farmers and agribusiness operators are expected to benefit from quicker market access, reduced spoilage of perishable produce, and improved regional competitiveness.

The agreements also seek to remove non-tariff barriers that have previously disrupted trade relations between the two nations. Leaders from both countries expressed optimism that stronger cooperation would increase investment opportunities, support food security, and boost incomes for small-scale farmers and cross-border traders.

The renewed partnership signals a fresh era of regional integration and economic collaboration within the East African Community, with agriculture expected to remain at the center of shared growth and development.
