Visitors at the Nakuru ASK Show had an opportunity to learn about Canola, one of the world's most valuable oilseed crops. Displayed by ADC, the crop attracted many farmers interested in high-value farming due to its wide range of uses in food production, livestock feeding, and industrial manufacturing.
Canola thrives best in cool highland regions with temperatures ranging between 10°C and 25°C. It matures within 80 to 150 days, depending on the variety and climatic conditions. The crop performs well in fertile, well-drained soils and requires proper land preparation and timely weed management to achieve high yields.
One of the greatest benefits of canola is its production of high-quality edible oil. The seeds are cold-pressed to produce healthy cooking oil that is low in saturated fats and rich in heart-friendly unsaturated oils. This has made canola oil a preferred choice for health-conscious consumers around the world.
Beyond human consumption, canola also supports the livestock industry. After oil extraction, the remaining seed cake is processed into high-protein animal feed, making it an excellent supplement for dairy cattle, poultry, sheep, and goats.
