Visitors at the Machakos ASK Show 2026 were impressed by the presentation of Azolla by Onyoona Nkatha, a Grade 9 student from Earlybird School. During her presentation, Nkatha explained that Azolla is a unique aquatic plant that grows in Kenya and many parts of Africa.
Nkatha Onyoona highlighted its growing importance in modern livestock farming due to its high nutritional value. Nkatha explained that Azolla is widely used as animal feed for poultry, dairy cows, goats, pigs, rabbits, sheep, and fish.
The plant contains high levels of protein, vitamins, amino acids, and minerals that help animals grow faster, improve milk production, and enhance overall health. Because it grows rapidly and requires minimal resources, Azolla offers farmers a low-cost alternative to expensive commercial feeds.
According to Nkatha, Azolla is planted in shallow ponds, water troughs, or lined pits filled with clean water. A small quantity of Azolla is introduced into the water, where it spreads across the surface. With adequate sunlight, nutrients, and water, the plant multiplies very quickly and can be harvested within a few weeks.
Nkatha further explained that Azolla is environmentally friendly because it helps conserve soil fertility and reduces the cost of livestock production. Its ability to grow rapidly throughout the year makes it a reliable feed source for farmers. Her presentation demonstrated how simple innovations like Azolla can contribute significantly to sustainable agriculture and improved food security in Kenya.
