Speaking during the exhibition, Richmond Terrance Farm Manager Jackline Jackson explained that ornamental birds play a significant role in improving the livelihoods of many households. According to her, these birds are particularly beneficial to elderly people and persons living with disabilities because they are relatively easy to manage and can provide a steady source of income through the sale of birds and eggs.

“Ornamental birds are more than just beautiful poultry. They are highly nutritious and offer valuable economic opportunities to farmers. Their eggs are considered more nutritious than ordinary chicken eggs, making them highly sought after in the market,” said Jackson.

She noted that demand for ornamental birds has been steadily rising due to their unique characteristics and the growing interest in specialty poultry farming. Beyond their decorative appeal, the birds are also valued for breeding purposes and as companion animals in some households.

The exhibition revealed that a pair consisting of one male and one female ornamental bird sells for KSh 7,000, while a single bird costs KSh 3,500. Their eggs also command a premium price, with one egg retailing at KSh 200.

Many visitors expressed surprise at the market value of the birds but acknowledged that their rarity, beauty, and nutritional benefits justify the higher prices. Farmers attending the show showed keen interest in learning how to start ornamental poultry enterprises as a way of diversifying their farming activities and increasing income.
