Innovation in agriculture took center stage at the 2026 Makueni Agricultural Show as Skygo Company Ltd unveiled a multi-purpose Skygo motorbike designed to transform farming, especially in Kenya's arid and semi-arid regions. The machine attracted hundreds of farmers eager to learn how one motorcycle could perform several agricultural tasks beyond transportation.
According to Mr. Samson Mutinda, the operator demonstrating the technology, the Skygo motorbike is fitted with a powerful engine that can drive a water pump for irrigation while still serving as an everyday motorcycle for transport. Instead of purchasing a separate irrigation engine, farmers can simply connect the pump to the motorcycle, making irrigation more affordable and accessible.
"The motorcycle saves farmers money because one machine performs many functions," explained Mr. Mutinda. "It can pump water from rivers, dams or boreholes directly to farms, helping farmers irrigate crops even during prolonged dry seasons."
Besides irrigation, the Skygo motorbike remains a reliable means of transporting farm produce, fertilizers, seeds and other agricultural inputs to and from the farm. This makes it particularly suitable for small-scale farmers who need a practical and cost-effective solution for both production and marketing. The innovation is expected to improve food production by enabling year-round farming through reliable irrigation while reducing labour costs.
Farmers who attended the demonstration praised the technology for its simplicity, fuel efficiency and versatility, noting that it could significantly boost agricultural productivity in counties such as Makueni where water scarcity remains a major challenge.
The Skygo stand demonstrated how modern engineering can support climate-smart agriculture by combining mobility with irrigation technology. As Kenya continues to embrace mechanized farming, innovations like the Skygo irrigation motorbike offer farmers an affordable pathway to higher yields, increased incomes and sustainable agricultural development.
