Visitors at the 2026 Makueni Agricultural Show in Makindu were drawn to the Skygo Makindu Motors exhibition stand, where modern farm machinery demonstrated how mechanization is transforming farming in Kenya. One of the biggest attractions was a compact two-wheel walking tractor fitted with a precision planter, which was demonstrated by machine operator Mr. Samson Mutinda.
According to Mr. Mutinda, the machine is designed to make farming easier, faster and more cost-effective, especially for small-scale farmers. Powered by a diesel engine, the walking tractor drives the planter through a belt and gear system. As the operator guides the machine across the field, it opens planting furrows, places seeds at the correct spacing and depth, and covers them with soil in one continuous operation.
He explained that the machine significantly reduces the amount of labour required compared to manual planting. Tasks that would normally take several people an entire day can be completed by one operator within a few hours, saving both time and production costs.
Mr. Mutinda also noted that precision planting ensures uniform seed spacing, which promotes even crop growth, improves plant populations and ultimately increases yields. Farmers can adjust the planter depending on the crop being planted, making it suitable for maize, beans, groundnuts and other row crops.
Another major advantage is fuel efficiency. The compact engine consumes relatively little diesel while delivering enough power to work effectively on small and medium-sized farms. Its simple controls and ease of maintenance make it ideal even for first-time users.
The demonstration attracted dozens of farmers eager to learn about modern farming technologies. Skygo Makindu Motors encouraged farmers to embrace mechanization as a practical solution to labour shortages, rising production costs and the need for increased agricultural productivity. The innovation showcased how affordable machinery can help farmers produce more while reducing the physical demands of farming.
