Watermelon farming is becoming one of the most profitable agricultural enterprises in Kenya's Lower Eastern region, particularly in Makueni, Kitui, and Machakos counties. During the Makueni Agricultural Show 2026, agricultural experts highlighted watermelon as a climate-smart crop that performs exceptionally well under the region's warm temperatures and irrigation systems.

According to the exhibitors, watermelons thrive in Lower Eastern because they require plenty of sunshine and warm weather for proper flowering, fruit development, and sweetness. The region's well-drained sandy and loamy soils also provide ideal growing conditions by preventing waterlogging, which can damage the crop's roots.

Another advantage is that watermelon can be successfully grown using irrigation, allowing farmers to produce fruits throughout the year even when rainfall is scarce. Most improved varieties mature within 75 to 90 days, enabling farmers to earn income quickly and even harvest more than one crop each year.

Experts explained that watermelon is highly profitable due to its strong demand in local markets, supermarkets, hotels, schools, and urban centres. During the hot season, demand rises as consumers seek the refreshing fruit. A well-managed acre can produce high yields, giving farmers attractive returns on their investment.

Besides its commercial value, watermelon is highly nutritious. It contains over 90 percent water, making it excellent for hydration. It is also rich in Vitamin A, Vitamin C, antioxidants, and lycopene, nutrients that support healthy skin, strengthen the immune system, and promote heart health.

Farmers were advised to use certified seeds, maintain proper spacing, apply organic manure and recommended fertilizers, control pests and diseases, and harvest fruits at the correct maturity stage to achieve the best quality.
