Residents of Mbitini Ward witnessed a major milestone in agricultural development after Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. officially commissioned the Kavuthu Cold Store and Pack House, a project expected to transform farming and reduce post-harvest losses in the region.
The newly launched 10-metric-tonne facility in Kavuthu will help farmers preserve fresh produce for longer periods, improve quality standards, and access both local and export markets more efficiently. For years, many farmers in Makueni have struggled with huge losses caused by poor storage, lack of cooling facilities, and limited market access. The cold storage facility is now expected to offer a practical solution by ensuring produce remains fresh and market-ready.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Governor Mutula said the county government is committed to empowering farmers through modern agricultural infrastructure and organized market systems. He noted that agriculture remains the backbone of Makueni’s economy and promised continued investment in projects that directly improve farmers’ livelihoods.
The governor also unveiled a new plan to establish cooperative societies in every ward across the county. According to him, the cooperatives will help farmers access affordable farm inputs, better markets, financial support, and agricultural training. The initiative is also expected to strengthen bargaining power among farmers and encourage value addition in agricultural production.

Governor Mutula, who was accompanied by Deputy Governor Lucy Mulili, Speaker Douglas Mbilu, county executives, and MCAs, also held meetings with local residents to discuss development challenges affecting the community.
Residents welcomed the projects, expressing optimism that the cold store and cooperative movement will improve household incomes, create jobs for youth, and stimulate economic growth in Makueni County.
