Kitui County Strengthens Fight Against Post-Harvest Losses Through RE-GAIN Initiative(Photos)

The County Government of Kitui County has reaffirmed its commitment to improving food security and boosting farmers’ incomes through support for the RE-GAIN Initiative, a regional project focused on reducing post-harvest losses across agricultural value chains.

Kitui County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture, Stephen Mbaya Kimwele, today participated in the RE-GAIN Project National Steering Committee Meeting held at Kilimo House. The meeting brought together agricultural stakeholders and development partners to discuss practical solutions aimed at reducing food losses in Africa.

The RE-GAIN Initiative focuses on strengthening key areas in agriculture including proper harvesting methods, post-harvest handling, storage systems, transport and market logistics. Through these interventions, the project aims to ensure that farmers preserve more produce after harvest, access better markets and ultimately increase household incomes.

The project is being implemented in Kitui County alongside Embu County, Makueni County and Tharaka-Nithi County, with a strong focus on supporting smallholder farmers who often experience significant losses due to poor storage and limited access to modern preservation technologies. Key implementing partners in the initiative include FIPS Africa, Africa Bioharvest and East Africa Grain Council.

Speaking during the meeting, Dr. Kimwele emphasized that the county government remains committed to supporting programmes that enhance agricultural productivity, food preservation and market access. He noted that the initiative aligns with the development agenda of Julius Malombe, which prioritizes food security and economic empowerment for farming communities.

The RE-GAIN project is expected to play a major role in minimizing food waste while strengthening resilience among farmers in the region.
