Principal Secretary for Livestock Development, Jonathan Mueke, paid a courtesy call on Kirinyaga Governor H.E. Anne Waiguru ahead of the rollout of bulk milk coolers to dairy cooperatives across the county, marking a significant step towards strengthening Kenya's dairy value chain.

The meeting focused on practical interventions aimed at increasing productivity, improving milk quality, and enhancing incomes for dairy and other livestock farmers in Kirinyaga. The leaders emphasized the importance of investing in modern post-harvest infrastructure to reduce milk losses and ensure farmers receive better prices for their produce.

The planned distribution of bulk milk coolers is expected to transform milk handling by enabling dairy cooperatives to preserve milk for longer periods while maintaining quality standards. This will allow farmers to access premium markets and reduce spoilage, a challenge that has affected many smallholder producers.

PS Mueke reaffirmed the national government's commitment to supporting county governments in modernizing the livestock sector through strategic investments, technology adoption, and stronger cooperative societies. He noted that empowering farmers with the right infrastructure is key to improving household incomes and driving rural economic growth.

Governor Waiguru welcomed the partnership, saying the county remains committed to supporting initiatives that enhance agricultural productivity and create sustainable livelihoods for residents. She observed that dairy farming continues to be one of Kirinyaga's leading economic activities, supporting thousands of families directly and indirectly.

The collaboration between the Ministry of Livestock Development and the Kirinyaga County Government is expected to accelerate dairy sector growth, strengthen cooperative movements, and position farmers to benefit from increased production, better market access, and higher returns from their livestock enterprises.
