The Machakos ASK Show 2026 provided a platform for young learners to demonstrate their agricultural knowledge and innovation. Among the standout exhibitors was Diana Mueni, a learner from Machakos Comprehensive School, who impressed visitors with her presentation on broccoli farming and its nutritional benefits.

During her exhibition, Diana explained that broccoli is often mistaken for sukuma wiki (kale) because of its green appearance, but it is a completely different vegetable. She noted that broccoli is a highly nutritious crop that takes approximately three months to mature, making it a suitable option for farmers looking for a relatively quick harvest.

According to her presentation, proper spacing is important for achieving healthy crop growth. She recommended a spacing of about 60 centimeters from plant to plant, which allows the crop enough room to develop strong stems and healthy heads.

Diana also highlighted the many health benefits associated with broccoli consumption. She explained that broccoli is rich in Vitamins C and K, which are essential for boosting immunity, supporting healthy skin, and strengthening bones. In addition, the vegetable is a good source of dietary fibre, which promotes healthy digestion. She further pointed out that regular consumption of broccoli can help reduce constipation, making it an important vegetable for maintaining overall health.

A key aspect of her project was the promotion of organic farming practices. Diana stated that they grow their broccoli using organic methods and avoid the use of synthetic fertilizers. This approach, she said, responds to the increasing demand from consumers who prefer organically grown food products.

Her presentation demonstrated not only knowledge of crop production but also an understanding of nutrition and sustainable agriculture. Diana’s exhibit was a shining example of how young learners are embracing farming and contributing to conversations on healthy eating and environmentally friendly food production. Through such initiatives, the future of agriculture remains bright and promising.
