In the old days, courtship happened naturally during community gatherings, traditional dances, market visits, and social ceremonies. A young man interested in marrying a woman first informed his family, especially elders, who played an important role in guiding the process. Marriage decisions were not made in haste because the reputation and background of both families mattered greatly.
Before official negotiations began, elders quietly investigated the character of the bride’s and groom’s families. They checked for good behavior, discipline, hard work, and strong family values. This step helped ensure that the marriage would bring honor and stability to both families.
Once both sides were satisfied, respected elders from the groom’s family visited the bride’s home to formally announce their intentions. These visits were conducted with dignity and wisdom. The visitors often carried gifts such as honey, tobacco, traditional brew, or goats as a sign of goodwill and respect.

Today, although modern lifestyles and religion have influenced many traditions, the Kamba Community still proudly preserve important aspects of their marriage customs, especially dowry negotiations, family blessings, and respect for elders. These traditions continue to reflect the rich cultural identity and unity of the Kamba people.
