Potatoes are among the most profitable food and cash crops in Kenya. However, getting a high harvest depends greatly on planting at the right time and in the right region. Since potatoes grow best in cool climates with reliable rainfall, farmers must understand the ideal planting seasons for maximum yields.
In Kenya, potatoes thrive mainly in the highland regions where temperatures range between 15°C and 20°C. The best regions for potato farming include Nyandarua County, Nakuru County, Meru County, Elgeyo-Marakwet County, Bomet County, Kericho County, and parts of Kiambu County and Laikipia County.
The long rains season, which begins from March to May, is considered the best time to plant potatoes in most parts of Kenya. Farmers who plant at the onset of the rains benefit from adequate moisture, which supports proper tuber development and healthy crop growth.
The short rains season from October to December is also suitable for potato farming, especially in areas with good rainfall patterns. In regions with irrigation such as parts of Narok County and Uasin Gishu County, farmers can grow potatoes throughout the year.
For maximum harvest, farmers should use certified seeds, practice crop rotation, apply enough manure or fertilizer, and control diseases like late blight early. Proper spacing and timely weeding also improve yields significantly. By planting during the right season and following good farming practices, Kenyan farmers can enjoy bigger harvests, better quality potatoes, and increased profits from the growing demand for the crop.
